Dear Parents/Carers, Congratulations to Elm class for a brilliant assembly this morning and thank you to the parents who were able to join us. The children spoke beautifully and with great confidence, so well done to them all for working so well as a team.

It has been a busy week with Hazel and Olive classes visiting Dawlish Warren & Dawlish on Tuesday and Elm Class visiting West Town Farm with the pre-school at Ide yesterday. The children were all very well behaved and had a brilliant time. We are so lucky to have such wonderful places to visit in such close proximity to school.

Maple Class – change of parents evening dates

Unfortunately, due to an unforeseen circumstance Rachel Floyd will not be available for Parents’ Evening on Tuesday, 21st March. She is happy to come in on the following Tuesday, 28th March instead, so if any parents would like to swap across to this date please pop in and see her as soon as possible. Her Wednesday, 22nd March Parents’ evening goes ahead as already planned. Many thanks and sorry for the short notice

Sequoia class – new teachers

Jo Turner is returning from her maternity leave on Monday, 27th March, the week before the Easter holidays, and has requested to have a job share of 2.5 days a week. We are pleased to announce that her new job share teaching partner Mr Alex Keen has now been appointed. Alex has previously worked in a job share position in Dulverton so is well aware of the expectations of this role.

Many thanks to Ben Keenan who has been teaching Sequoia class since Jess Crickmay unexpectedly left in January. Ben will be leaving us at the end of this term but we will still be seeing him when he returns to Newtown as supply cover. We thank him for all his commitment to the temporary post and for all of the extra hours of his own time that he has put in outside of the classroom.

Parkinson’s Club

At the end of the Autumn term, Maple class entertained the folks at the Parkinson’s club who meet in the St Matthew’s church hall on a regular basis. The children always look forward to this annual event and the Parkinson’s Club really enjoy meeting all of our pupils and having a community link with us. They have kindly made a donation to school which will go towards our music & drama productions. Many, many, thanks to all of them for their kind gesture and a particular mention to Bill Flack for organising this wonderful event.

Red Nose Day

As parents are aware, Red Nose Day is next Friday, 24th March and we are holding a Talent Show in the hall. We ask that our pupils wear red clothes and if at all possible, bring along 50p for the charity on the day.  It should be a fun afternoon with the pupils entertaining us with: songs, dancing, magic, jokes, drama, playing a musical instrument etc. Please can parents encourage their children to take part in the Talent Show as unfortunately it will not be able to go ahead if we don’t have enough participants. We will make sure that lots of photographs are taken for next week’s newsletter.

Food, glorious food community project’ reminder

Cherry, Maple and Elm classes are participating in a very exciting project this term which will involve working with different community groups across Exeter. Jo Kingscott, Rachel Floyd and Steph Rowse are looking for parents or grandparents to help support this project who are keen gardeners or cooks.

Maybe they enjoy cooking food from a different culture and would be happy to share their recipes with the children? Volunteers would not necessarily work with their own child’s class so they would need to be flexible. Please speak to Jo Kingscott in Cherry class if you would be happy to help with this new project and thank you to parents who have already volunteered to help.

As part of this project the children in these three classes may be participating in some food tasting sessions, so please see the relevant class teachers if you would not like your child to participate or if your child has a particular food allergy of any sort.

Easter Competitions

We are holding Easter competitions on Thursday, 30th March and invite our Newtown children to take part, if they so wish. The Easter categories for the competitions are as follows:

Elm, Oak and Maple classes: Easter hats or bonnets

Sequoia and Cherry classes:  Decorated eggs

Hazel and Olive classes: Miniature gardens

Please can the ‘works of art’ be brought in to the school foyer area by the main office on Thursday, 30th March and the prizes will then be announced in assembly on the Friday, 31st March. We look forward to seeing the original ideas that the children come up with.

Many thanks for your continuing support,

train
