Dear Parents/Carers, Another busy week, with preparations now well underway for the ‘May Day’ celebrations next Friday afternoon. We hope that parents and grandparents will be able to come along to our unique annual event which will start at 2pm as long as the weather is dry. All of the children in the school will be participating and it is a fun afternoon for everyone involved.

Speech and Language Centre

Following a Devon County Council  review of  Speech and Language Centres over the last 6 months, the Local Authority have looked at the pattern of needs for children with speech and language difficulties and have found that this pattern has changed. The pupils no longer require provision in the same way that they did 5 years ago. As part of this evidence, there has been a natural change in parental expectations of where their child's speech and language needs can be met. Many now prefer their local school with good role models in terms of language, instead of their child traveling to a centre, which is sometimes out of their local area.

To support and reflect this change, it has been agreed that the LA no longer requires specified bases as Speech and Language Centres and consequently is closing both of the centers in North and South Devon  from September 2017.

In future, where a child presents with speech and language difficulties a referral will be made to the appropriate Speech and Language Therapy service for an assessment of need. Services for children with speech and language needs will then be co-ordinated across the county for all children.

Sadly for us, it means that Sarah Miller, the Lead teacher in our centre and also Karen White who was employed specifically to support these children, will be leaving us at the end of this Summer Term. They will both be a great loss to the school as they have fantastic knowledge and skills in this area of expertise. We thank them both for all their hard work and commitment over the years and wish them all the best in the future and hope that they will stay in touch.

Sarah Miller is at present seconded to work for Babcock in the Speech & Language consultancy team and she will be moving on to their team permanently once the centre closes at the end of the Summer Term.
