In this workshop, we discussed how we teach calculation - beginning with counting. It is important that the children look at the numbers in the calculation and decide on an efficient strategy. This could be calculating mentally, making jottings on paper or using a formal written method. It is important that children choose an efficient strategy to help them become fluent in their calculations.
We also discussed how we use the Connective Model in school to help children understand concepts. The connective model suggests linking language, images, context and symbols.
